After my full first listen of Smoke Detector I called Iceberg Theory and said "YOU MADE A FUCKING BOBBY WOMACK ALBUM?!" It might sound like a strange way to open a conversation about a 2022 rap album but if you listen to the horn on Chilly, the strings on Life Goes On, the tones on Blankets, the guitar on There are 2 Of You, even the big disco swing of Dream Life you can hear how these sonics could have made an incredible Bobby Womack album. The criminally humble Iceberg Theory threw his verbal hands up declaring "It's all Rich. I just sent him beats." The truth is that Iceberg's unincumbered voyage through sound created a giant box of lush puzzle pieces for Rich Jones to sift through and fit together in chunks.
The biggest misconception fans have is that they want what they want. Anyone who wanted Rich to just sing or just rap would be disappointed… until they listen. Smoke Detector is proof that a mixture including disco fantasy, hot tuna melts in cars, a seven-minute posse cut, laser sounds, etc with careful hands can become one definitive piece. Music that lives as vividly as this in my car and hard drive doesn't just please my tastebuds it expands them. The most precious connective thread we have on this journey in music is trust. I invest in Rich Jones and Iceberg Theory because I trust that they will bring new essential tastes to me. They trust me to figure it out.
